It's a noisy world.

Tuning in.

Has it ever occurred to us that the atmosphere around us is filled not just with air but with millions of voices and faces?

All we have to do is bring in a radio receiver and go round the dial and you will hear the voices. Alternatively, turn on the telly and you will see people from all over the world. But from where did the voices and faces originate? From the invisible, inaudible world around us.

There is far more going on than we could ever dream.

In the babble of voices God speaks. All we need is the right antenna to hear Him.

In the early 1900's my dad told me he used a crystal and cat's whisker as a crude radio. He was thrilled when he picked up snatches of music from the ether.

God has given each of us the most marvellous of receivers to hear Him.They are in built within our HEART not within our head.

This morning posture your heart towards heaven and ask the Lord to put you on His wavelength.

The balancing act

Tuning in.

Has it ever occurred to you that when God put the balance mechanism in human beings, He placed it in the ear?

There is a snail-like spiral behind the ear drum called the cochlea.
Amazingly that tiny spiral keeps you and me walking upright.

This cochlea was not put in the chest, or leg or even in the brain.
It was placed in the ear. The place of the listening!

"Hear O Israel" is the prelude to the commandments.
"My sheep HEAR my voice" said Jesus "And they follow Me."

When God speaks He does not yell over the noise of the T.V. set.
His voice is "still and small." It is also an inward voice.

To hear that voice we need to find a quiet place and a have a quiet time, daily. If we do we will more easily keep our balance in a topsy-turvy world.

Tuning in

We sure live in a noisy world and it seems to be getting noisier.

Each day is a cacaphony of cell phones, twitter, I pods, T.Vs and, of course, traffic.

How to hear God's voice in the face of this daily uproar?

In the Great Depression the Western Union advertised for a Telegraph man. These were the days of Morse code.

About fifty men showed up for the job. They were all milling around outside the main office waiting to be interviewed.

Suddenly one of the group headed for the office door and disappeared inside. Three minutes later he came out and said:
"All you guys can go home. I've been hired."

Someone asked him "How come?"

He replied: "While you were all talking, the boss in there tapped out a message in Morse code: 'The first person that comes into my office gets the job'. None of you heard. But I did, and I've been hired."

That's a good illustration about being tuned in.

Get on God's wave-length today and stay tuned. You'll be amazed what you will learn.

Tuning in

Our theme this week is "Being Tuned In".

In our technological world we are using terms that a hundred years ago would have left men mystified.

One of the commonest is "Being tuned in" which simply means , turning the dial until the message comes through loud and clear.

Tuning in.

Corrie Ten Boom, a dutch survivor from the Holocaust, was due to fly to America for a speaking engagement. The day before her trip she felt the Lord warning her not to take the flight. The plane crashed.

When she arrived in the U.S.A. she recounted her story about the voice that warned her about the fatal flight.

Someone in the audience called out "Why didn't He warn everybody?"

Ten Boom replied, "Maybe He did, but they weren't listening!"

Have you ever observed that there are eleven commandments not ten? The first commandment is "Tune in O Israel"

Let's make sure we find the right wave length as we press forward into the New Year.
