A farewell to a friend.

My phone rang at 7:30 this morning. Dan broke the news that Ron, a mutual friend of thirty years, had passed away through the night. No warning, no previous symptoms, a man in full health and zest of life suddenly gone. Carried away by a heart attack.
It has been a blow for his wife Cheryl, for his two sons, for his close christian friends, for the members of the yacht club where he served as chaplain; a blow to everyone who knew and loved him, but not a blow to God.
It must have been decided in a conversation to which none of us were privy that Ron was wanted up in Heaven. And so the call came to "come up higher" and that is a call that all of us must obey, ready or not.
Ron was ready.
Last week Ron and I held hands in prayer in his office and affirmed each other in our faith as we have done a thousand times before. This afternoon I held my final conversation with Ron and, in my heart, released him to a new place and a new work in a new world  where we shall shortly be joining him. Farewell my friend, the best is yet to be.
