This week: Budget special

Mr Micawber, a Charles Dickens character, reckoned  sixpence in debt at the end of the year to be misery.

Last night my wife, Pauline, did our monthly accounts and informed me, with some added emphasis, that our expenses had gone beyond our income.

She and Mr Micawber must be directly related somewhere on the family tree.

Nevertheless, while Pauline was talking, a simple solution to the U.S. debt problem occurred to me.

Choose 100 housewives randomly from across the world. Put them in charge of the U.S Treasury for the next ten years and let the Wise Guys look on.

Guaranteed that the deficit would be fixed and the debt mountain well reduced without the help of congress.

Power to our ladies!
