Snake handler and T.V. celebrity, Pastor Jamie Coots, died yesterday, an hour after he had been bitten by a large rattle snake in his Kentucky Pentecostal Church.
Coots had proclaimed in a National Geographic special that he was obeying God's Word when Mark 16 proclaims that true believers shall "Take up serpents and they shall not be harmed"
Coots knew the scripture, his wife knew the scripture, his congregation knew the scripture, but it would appear that the snake had never read it!
There in the middle of his snake act sermon Coots received a fatal bite to his arm.
The para-medics arrived but were waved off. It was against Coots' faith to call on men for help.
Later this week the faithful will gather to say farewell to their courageous pastor. Sincere they are, but in future services it would be healthy for them to expand their knowledge of the Bible to include Luke 4:12 "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord Thy God."
